1. Diagnosis
Symptoms of a faulty steering column in your 2009 BMW 3 Series might include: stiff steering, excessive play or loose steering, difficulty when turning or unexpected steering behaviour. Errors codes such as B1000 - Electronic Steering Column Lock can be verified with an OBD-II Scanner.
2. Required Tools
- OBD-II Diagnostic Scanner
- Automotive Socket Set
- Automotive Torque Wrench
- Phillips and Flat Head Screwdrivers
- Selector Lever Cover Tool (BMW Reference Tool # 00 9 341)
- Telescoping Magnet
3. Repair Steps
- Start by using your OBD-II scanner to confirm the steering column fault code.
- Once the fault is confirmed, remove the ignition key and disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Next, remove the lower panel below the steering column (typically, this involves removing a series of Phillips screws).
- Utilize your BMW selector lever cover tool to remove the selector lever handle, then remove all screws holding the selector lever cover.
- Once the selector lever cover is removed, use your automotive socket set and torque wrench to remove the bolts holding the steering column in place.
- Before fully removing the steering column assembly, remember to disconnect the wiring harness attached to the steering column. This avoids strains or possible disconnections.
- With the old steering column removed, install your new steering column and firmly bolt it into place following the BMW recommended torque specification.
- Re-attach the wiring harness to your new steering column. Secure the lower panel and selector lever cover, and then firmly replace the selector lever handle.
- Reconnect the battery, and use your OBD-II scanner to clear the fault code.
- It's recommended to perform a test drive to confirm the proper function of the new steering column, with careful monitoring of the steering behaviour.
4. Tips for successful repair
Use your telescoping magnet to retrieve any dropped screws or bolts. Always work slowly and avoid forcing connections or bolts, which can strip threads or break connectors. Working in a well-lit environment can help avoid missteps.
5. Potential Pitfalls
- Failing to disconnect the battery before beginning work. Doing so can result in electronic damages or unintentional airbag deployment.
- Failing to properly disconnect the wiring harness before removing the steering column. This can lead to unplanned disconnections or strains.
- Not following the recommended torque specifications when bolting the new steering column in place. This can lead to an insecure column or component damages.
